Top Five Books That Have Inspired Me To Write

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” — Marcus Tullius Cicero

Happy belated Valentine’s Day, everyone!

I thought that I would post the top five books that have inspired me to write, because ultimately, reading is what first inspired me to write. Okay, so these are in no particular order, by the way. I’ll just go from memory.

I’ll start with the obvious.

5. The Harry Potter Series by J.K Rowling:

Okay, so yeah, this is an obvious one. I’m sure that most writers out there, and even readers, have been inspired by Harry Potter one way or another. Harry Potter is just one of those series’ that mark my childhood of what it was. And because of that, it has inspired me to be the writer that I am today.

4. The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer:

There are definitely valid reason as to why people don’t like this series — and to be honest, I get it — but you can’t deny that it started off a whole new genre of books. I’m pretty sure that before Twilight there wasn’t really a genre of Paranormal Romance. Without it, there probably wouldn’t be half of the books that have been released today. It started a trend. And around the time that I read the Twilight series, I wrote my first novel.

3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins:

Even though I thought these books were flawed, they were still a huge inspiration. And just like with Twilight, it has started off the whole Dystopian genre that I am really starting to love.

2. The Iron Fey Series by Julie Kagawa:

I cannot express my love for these books enough. I love the feel of the urban/fantasy genre. It was written beautifully, and made me want to explore the Urban Fantasy genre a bit more — which, since then, I have.

1. Pretty Little Liars Series by Sara Shepard:

Okay, so I’ll admit — I did enjoy the books, but they weren’t the best. Sometimes I thought that they were a bit silly at times. But that’s not really the point of this blog post, is it? It still inspired me. For NaNoWriMo last year, I decided to write a first draft of YA a Mystery/thriller novel because of them. I am now currently in the rewriting process of the novel.

So that’s it for today. What books inspired you to write?

  1. Actually, Laurel K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series was essentially a better Twilight pre-Twilight, but we just call that Urban Fantasy (tbh, at this stage in the series we call it Erotica lol) Regardless, it’s a great read. Check it out if you haven’t already and keep writing! WattPad needs you!
