High fantasy is my all time favourite genre to both read and write. Throne of Glass, Lord of the Rings, these are just a few of the wonderful high fantasy books / films out there, and they all share something in common for me: I love them all (not included the Lord of the Rings novels, they weren’t really for me . . .) The magic, the adventure, the characters — just a few of the reasons why I love the genre.
You get to create whole new worlds. You get to create whole new worlds, races, religions! The possibilities are endless — and essentially, you can do whatever you want, and the only boundaries you have are the ones you set. Who wouldn’t want to write about that!?
Dragons. Dragons?! ‘Nuff said!
Magic. Everyone likes a bit of magic, yeah? A bit of the unbelievable? Something exciting; something, well . . . magical? I do. A lot of high fantasy has some element of magic in it, no matter how small, which is what I love so much about it.
The Great Adventure. Given — not every high fantasy novel has to have its big adventure, but for me it’s definitely a big part of why I liked the genre. Think Lord of the Rings — the lovable hobbits off on an epic quest three times their puny size. And despite the massive odds up against them, they manage.
The Baddass Characters. Two words you for, my friend: Celaena Sardothien. She is one of my favourite protagonists of all time — sassy, quirky, and independent, she knows her way around a blade, and has a tongue as sharp as a dagger. Who doesn’t like a character that knows how to take care of themselves? High fantasy often features characters that are strong and driven for some reason (whether that be to survive, or a desire for power) which is a massive reason I love the genre.
